Keys to creating a Healthy Home

I started my non-toxic journey 2 years ago after having my first baby. I am a wife, mama, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I became a first time mama at the beginning of 2022, and since then, I have learned so much about chemicals and toxins, and how to live a healthier life.

When I was 14 years old, I began having multiple health issues. I went to specialist after specialist, and had many tests done. After so many inconclusive tests, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease, slowed gastric motility, chronic migraines, Hashimoto’s, and a perfusion problem where my blood doesn't flow as quickly as it should. With all of these diagnosis, came many medications.

I chose to become a nurse because it was important to me to be able to advocate for others the way I wish someone had advocated for me. I worked as a pediatric nurse specializing in Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant for 3.5 years. This career opened my eyes even more to how crucial it is to monitor what we allow in our bodies, and what we surround ourselves with.

This journey has taken me 2 years to truly feel like I have accomplished transitioning the majority of my home to non-toxic living. I am not perfect, but I have become more mindful and observant of the products I am bringing into my home.

I wrote this post to help take out the guess-work. I know how overwhelming it can feel as you begin to learn more about toxins, ingredients, and more. I made this to serve as a bit of a starting point for your own journey to creating a healthier home and lifestyle. I've done all the research so that you don’t have to.

I also will work with you 1:1 to help make those swaps.

I am here to help you start making the lifestyle changes you’ve wanted to make, one small step at a time.

Why it Matters

There are many reasons you might be attracted to a non-toxic lifestyle. Maybe your digestion has been feeling off, or you’re dealing with chronic symptoms like fatigue, muscle aches, mood swings, acne, skin flare-ups, inflammation, or hormonal imbalances. These are all potential signs that the body is dealing with excess toxicity.

Maybe you want to take preventative measures to avoid more serious health issues like cancer and heart disease down the road, since most of the commonly available household cleaning products contain cancer causing chemicals. Or, maybe you’re simply drawn to a more natural and holistic way of living.

The average American woman puts over 168 chemicals on her body every day and many of those chemicals are linked to various health concerns such as cancer, infertility, poor infant and maternal health outcomes, obesity, asthma, allergic reactions, and more.

While our bodies are made to detox, it can only handle so much. If the amount of toxins exceeds the rate at which the body can detox them, toxin overload can happen.

Nowadays, we are exposed to so many toxins in our environments and products in our everyday lives that it doesn't take long for our systems to become overloaded and unable to keep up or detox fast enough.

Think of it like a bucket with a small hole at the bottom. If more and more water (toxins) get poured in faster than it can drain (detox), it will start to overflow.

This is essentially what happens in our bodies when our toxin burden gets too high - and we often start to see symptoms of it such as skin issues, low energy, chronic illness, and more.

Benefits of Non-toxic Living

  • Improved digestion and relief from symptoms like constipation, gas, bloating, IBS etc.

  • Clearer skin

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Better immunity

  • Balanced hormones

  • Enhanced fertility and reproductive health

  • Better sleep

  • Lower stress levels

  • Improved focus / less brain fog

  • Disease prevention

… and so much more!

Plus, non-toxic products are a lot better for the environment, so you’ll be doing the planet a favor, too.

The goal with natural living is not to live in fear of toxins, nor is it to live 100% toxin-free. It’s inevitable that we will be exposed to some level of toxicity, and to a certain extent, your body is equipped to handle toxins just fine on its own.

The goal, then, is not to avoid toxins entirely, but to prevent toxic overload (and the uncomfortable symptoms that come with it) by reducing exposure where we can. That way, when you are (inevitably) exposed to toxins, your body is able to handle it and detoxify with ease.

Perfection isn’t necessary with non-toxic living, nor is it even possible, so aim for mindfulness over perfection and remember to take it slow. It’s not necessary to overhaul your entire life all at once. Instead, wait until you run out of a product, then choose a more natural one to replace it.

Let’s chat swaps

When it comes to making the switch from conventional products to clean living, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. This guide will help you start with one category at a time. Don’t stress about doing everything at once.

I always recommend starting with your personal care products. The skin absorbs an average of 64% of total contaminant dosage. Other studies found the face to be several times more permeable than broad body surfaces and an absorption rate of 100% for underarms and genitalia. And another peer-reviewed study showed 100% absorption for fragrance ingredients. Once you've swapped as many of those as possible, then graduate to the next step. Remember, it's about lowering your overall toxin burden, not perfection.
